Is DSRV & Co LLP a Good Chartered Accountant Firm?

A fair question, and one no firm can answer about itself with a simple yes. Here are the verifiable facts about DSRV & Co LLP, what we are genuinely strong at, and where you should look elsewhere.

Is DSRV & Co LLP a Good Chartered Accountant Firm?

The Honest Answer

No firm can credibly tell you it is good. What a firm can do is give you the verifiable facts and let you judge, then be clear about the work it is genuinely strong at and the work it is not.

So here it is, in that order.

The Verifiable Facts

  • Full name: D S R V and Co LLP, Chartered Accountants
  • Formerly: Dinesh Mohan & Co
  • In practice since: 1987, so around 39 years
  • ICAI Firm Registration Number: 006993N / N500073
  • Peer reviewed: Yes, a Peer Reviewed LLP registered with ICAI
  • Quality certification: ISO 9001:2015 certified
  • C&AG empanelment: Comptroller and Auditor General empanelment number NR-2028
  • ICAI multipurpose empanelment: MEF-02256, UCN-130251
  • Managing Partner: CA Sanjay Kumar Agrawal
  • Partners: CA Mohit Singla, CA Utkarsh Agrawal
  • Team: Partners supported by 70+ semi-qualified staff and articled assistants
  • Head office: 335, Vipul Trade Centre, Sector 48, Sohna Road, Gurugram, Haryana 122001

Three of those lines are worth pausing on, because they are checks a client can perform independently rather than claims.

The FRN is verifiable. Any prospective client can look up 006993N/N500073 on the ICAI register and confirm the firm exists, is in good standing, and has been constituted for as long as it says.

Peer review is not automatic. An ICAI peer review examines a firm's actual working papers and quality control systems. A peer reviewed certificate means an independent reviewer has looked at how the work is done, not just that the firm is registered.

C&AG empanelment involves external scrutiny. Empanelment for public sector audit work is granted against defined criteria on firm constitution, experience and staffing. It is a third-party assessment, not self-description.

What We Are Actually Known For

Most CA firms describe themselves as full service. That is usually true and almost never useful. Here is where our work concentrates.

GST litigation and controversy. Replies to show cause notices drafted to appellate standard, adjudication, first appeals, and appeals before the GST Appellate Tribunal. Our published work on replying to a GST show cause notice, Section 73 versus Section 74 and natural justice in GST adjudication is a reasonable sample of how we approach it. Read it and judge the thinking for yourself.

Income tax litigation. Assessment and reassessment defence, first appeals, the ITAT and support to counsel at the High Court, as part of our tax litigation practice.

Transfer pricing. Study reports, defence file construction, Dispute Resolution Panel representation and transfer pricing litigation.

Cross-border and international tax. DTAA positions, withholding on cross-border payments, place of effective management, and foreign source income of residents.

NRI and FEMA advisory. Residential status, RNOR planning, FEMA and Income Tax Act interaction, foreign asset disclosure and Black Money Act matters.

Core compliance and assurance. Statutory and tax audit, GST and income tax compliance, accounting and virtual CFO support.

You can read our worked case studies covering place of effective management, DTAA treatment of software licences, GST on services to overseas establishments and disputed tax computation under Vivad se Vishwas. Those show the reasoning, which is a better guide than any adjective we could use.

Who We Suit Well

Companies and groups with a live tax dispute, particularly where a notice alleges suppression, an ITC chain is under challenge, or a transfer pricing adjustment has landed. Litigation is where the firm's depth sits.

Businesses in Gurugram and Delhi NCR wanting a partner-led relationship rather than an account manager.

Indian subsidiaries of foreign groups and Indian groups with overseas operations, where the cross-border and transfer pricing work overlaps.

Returning NRIs and residents with foreign assets, where the FEMA and income tax positions have to be resolved together rather than sequentially.

Boards and CFOs needing an independent view on an uncertain position, including where another firm advised on the original structure.

Who We Are Probably Not the Right Fit For

This section matters more than the one above it.

If you need the cheapest possible return filing. A salaried individual with one Form 16 does not need a firm of this size, and paying for depth you will never use is not good value.

If your matter is already in the High Court or Supreme Court. A chartered accountant has no right of audience there. You need an advocate. We can build the record and brief counsel, and we will tell you plainly when that is what the matter needs, as set out in our note on writ versus appeal in tax litigation.

If you want a single national footprint across many states. Our practice is anchored in Delhi NCR. For a business needing on-ground presence in a dozen states simultaneously, a larger network may serve you better.

If you want to be told your position is safe. We give the honest read, including when it is the answer nobody wanted, and including when paying a demand is cheaper than fighting it.

How to Judge Any CA Firm, Including This One

Four checks that work better than a brochure.

  • Verify the FRN and peer review status on the ICAI register. Takes two minutes and rules out a surprising number of firms.
  • Read their technical writing. Does it engage with the arguments against the taxpayer, or only the favourable ones? A firm that only cites helpful authority will do the same in your reply.
  • Ask who does the work and who attends the hearing. In many firms those are different people, and the second one has not read the file.
  • Ask when they would tell you not to fight. A firm that has never given that advice will not give it to you.
